Can I get a reward if I tell the insurance company that another Yahoo! User plans to commit fraud?

I saw a question on Yahoo! Answers from someone planning to commit insurance fraud by filing a false claim relating to damage to a car. If I send the question and the username to the major car insurance companies, can they determine the person's real identity from the Yahoo! username, stop the fraud if the person is insured by them, and give me a reward? Or would I need to know the person's real identity, not just the username, to turn the person in to the insurance fraud investigators and get a reward?

No insurance company will pay you a reward for reporting this, even if it is proven he did in fact commit fraud.

Now this guy only has a user name just like me, which is not my real name and he also has no email address shown, just like me for privacy purposes. If he did, he would be an idiot to give those details and then go on yahoo and pose this possible fraud on his insurance company.

You could go to the major insurance companies, but do you realize that in your state there could be over 100 or more? Or even if you just go to the major companies, he could be insured with a little company you never heard of. How could the insurance company find out who he is? Most companies if you file a claim ask for the persons name, policy number, make of car etc. On any given day, they could have over 100 new claims filed and there is no way they could go thu their records, (or even try) since you would have to have specific details for them to search. I have had claims where we know the persons name, address etc and call the other insurance company and they cant find a record of it, unless we have a policy number, or maybe that person is not on the policy, but is under a different name.

I understand your frustration and commend you for wanting to get this person for "possible" fraud, but most likely the insurance company may discover this on their own. Almost all companies have a SIU (special investigation unit) which they use if they suspect fraud. And if he does this, it will be on his record. Believe me, most insurance companies are on an alert to anything that does not make sense.

good luck

No you can't - and even if you had their full name, etc, you wouldn't get a reward.

I don't think they would give you a reward either way.
