How do the credit repair companies fix your credit?

Iv'e heard they send letters but how can I learn aboutit to do this for myself and my friends and family?

Ok, I can see that I am going to have to dispell the myths about credit restoration.

A site I've used for info in the past ...

Hope it all works out

It depends on the repair company. Yes they will send out dispute letters in most cases. Other will send dispute letters which actually call out the creditor on violations of FCRA in order to get accounts deleted. The main issue with most credit repair companies is they only focus on 1 aspect of what effects credit scores and that is the derogatory information.
This company http://www.5stepcreditrepair.com will do the dispute letters in addition to helping you add new accounts and removing inquires. They also use rapid re-scoring to get changes update at the credit bureau level in 7-10 days instead of waiting 30-90 days for the accounts to update "naturally".

You are about to lose.

Credit repair companies often are not the best way to proceed. Since this activity involves my field, I would like to ask:

1. In what state are you located? (I am not allowed to offer detailed advice in a state where I am not licensed.)

2. Have you contacted each of the companies to which you owe money?
(Many companies will work with you, if you mention your situation and do not attempt to defraud them.)

3. Are you willing to have another person contact each company on your behalf PRIOR to contracting with a credit repair company?

4. Do you currently have a money management system in place? If the different companies give you a break, they do not want to see you in trouble again. The best way (often) to avoid the trouble is to have a budget in place at the time you speak with the individual companies.

5. Since there are a few companies that are reputable, ascertain in advance if they will lower their fees if you bring in friends and family members for the same service. Be careful of the answer.

The best way to repair your credit is to take good care of it in the first place! The three rating companies are required to provide you a copy of your rating one time per year, upon request. You have 30 days to make corrections to their records. In addition to the listing of your personal debt record and the rating, they may provide you suggestions as to why your credit was evaluated as it was. This information provides you some clues as to how to improve your rating. Here are links to the three agencies:

There are also many articles online on subjects related to improving your credit rating. You could check finance.yahoo.com or msn or forbes or others. One site that has a long list of helpful articles on a lot of personal finance topics is http://www.investopedia.com/ . When you get to their website, look for the following article titles in their list:
