What is the point of a health care plan if u pay first?

i have school dental coverage and i have to pay first and then file for a claim. i dont understand... besides the fact ill get the $ later, why do i ahve to pay first if ill be reimbursed? what if i cant afford to pay first

It's usually not your plan. It's your dentist. Your dentist can bill the insurance company and then bill you, but he/she wants their money first. Ask your dentist to only have you pay what you're going to owe OR wait until it's processed altogether. You may not need a new plan...you might just need a new dentist.

PS Insurance from your school usually is in the 'stinks' category, so that was a mistake. Call an insurance broker to help you.

Well....if you have to pay for the services first and get reimbursed....you're not going to get too crazy with the treatment. You'll have done only what has to be done. So it helps to keep costs under control.

This is very common in dental insurance plans. But if you don't like it, search around and see if you can find another plan you like better.

That's the terms you agreed to when you first bought the insurance.

If you wanted something that paid on your behalf, you should have spent more money on the insurance.

With health insurance, including dental, you get what you pay for. You bought a cheap plan.

Quite simple: that is the way that perticular insurance coverage is structured - on a reimbursement basis.

If you don't like the way that plan works maybe you should get a different plan.
