I am beneficiary of employee life ins. on recently deceased relative but need to furnish certificate w/cause of death. the company cannot tell me how to obtain this info. i'm in the west and they're on the east coast. I have called the probate lawyer w/o success.
Go online to the state in which the certificate was filed. Search for obtaining a death certificate. As in - CA +death certificates. It's very easy. I've obtained dozens of them as a genealogist.
You need a letter from the insurance company stating that they need the certified copy of the death certificate, and then you need to go to the county recorder, or whichever entity, for the locality that certified the death. With a copy of that letter, you can pay a small fee, and have them send you the certified death certificate.
Unless the probate lawyer is being paid by YOU, he's not going to do this for you.
Most cities/counties/states, you can find the application online, and just fill it out and mail it in.
You do not need an attorney. But it would help to know what state the person died in. You might want to post that info for more help.
You need to go to the county records building where the person died, show that you have a valid reason to get the certificate, pay $10 and get it.
