My fiance just called directv and gave his SS# and they went to run it though and.... ????? 10 pts!!?

When he called, they had to run his social security number through to get directv without paying deposit. It did not go through and they told us it was blocked and they could not look at his credit..!!

Why is that for? How did it get blocked to where he could not run his social security number through for them to look at his credit.. We are both wondering this and it is driving us nuts.

relax all utilities do this - ask for the SSN to check credit because the results will impact the risk bracket you will be placed in. basically your risk rating with a utility will determine if you need to pay a deposit, if you can buy additional equipment on "credit" and be billed on your utility bill vs. paying up front or putting a credit card on file incase you don't pay your bills. Your risk level also determines your grace period in your monthly billing cycle. Poor credit will usually mean if you don't pay your bill after the 2nd nasty note they'll disconnect you. On the other hand someone with good credit/low risk can not pay their bill for 6 months and still not have service disconnected.

Based on revisions to the privacy act nearly 10 years ago - customers can refuse to provide their SSN to a utility company. Unfortunately, if you refuse it does mean you will have to go through some delays to get your service working and yes, it may require a hefty deposit upwards of $300.

If your fiance's SSN didn't pass for some reason it could be for various reasons - make sure the SSN submitted was correct, make sure the name/spelling matches otherwise he may have no credit history or something noted on the account that has to be cleared. Employees at utility companies such as AT&T, Verizon, DirecTV, DISH, Comcast..etc cannot "look at your credit" the same way you can look at your credit with Experian or Transunion. Their CRM systems will "talk" to the credit app on the back end and merely tell the rep whether or not it's passed and if ordering can proceed.

Chill out - there are extensive m&p's in place for call center representatives, especially at utility companies where CPNI is required before handling any customer accounts. They cannot see your credit - so your best bet is to have your fiance print out his credit report on the 3 in 1 sites TRW, Experian and Transunion for FREE and have him review his credit history to clear up any junk that might be on there.`
