When paid off will collection services be taken off my credit report and improve my credit score?

I go in a car accident and am about to finish my lawsuit and get my money and pay off all the medical bills. I have over $10,000 in unpaid medical bills and some of it is on my credit report. When the bills are paid off will my score improve? Thank you

Contrary to what some may say, any reduction in balances owed does improve ones score. The debt goes from being derogatory to paid in full which due to the fact that it had gone to collections remains potentially negative. IT may not be a significant increase, but one none the less and lenders will give it far less consideration once paid.

Your attorney should have notified the hospital and/or medical provider that you were in litigation and that payment of debts would be satisfied upon completion of civil action.

You should have your attorney draft a letter requesting that a pay for deletion agreement be reached before payment is made to the collection agency. Creditors listen to attorneys more then they do regular people. You may even get your attorney to notify the reporting agencies and request the debts be removed as they were pending litigation at the time they went into collections.

Ask your attorney if your state is one that makes "balanced billing" illegal. This is where the medical provider asks that the insured pays any difference that the insurance company did not cover.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Probably not. When dealing with collection accounts they are just marked as paid and or settled depending on how they are paid. A paid collection account looks the same on your credit report as an unpaid collection account in terms of your credit score. If you are talking with whatever agency has your collection accounts it is possible you can negotiate them off your credit report know as a pay for delete. If you do this it is best to get it in writting before any type of deal or payment information is given out. I ALWAYS reccommend paying collection agencies via money order personally. Realistically you will probably not see these collection items fall off your report. It may help to have them paid in some circumstances if you are dealing with a banker whom you have done alot of business with over the years they may see your effort to pay off old bad debt as favorable. Someone who just looks at your score will not see any consideration for you paid off collection debt as again it does not help your score. Hope some of this info helps
Best of Luck

Only if you can get the creditors to agree to remove the derogatory items from your credit report. As these are medical bills, you have a good chance of getting them removed. Get a written agreement before you pay.

Normally, paying derogatory items will not improve your score at all. The damage is already done and will remain on your credit file for the balance of the 7 year reporting period.

You have to make a deal with all your creditors that they remove derogatory info from your credit files and you would pay them. You have to get this in writing before you pay them. The damage has already done to your credit report and just paying them would not clear your credit report for next 7 years. So you have to remove theses bad accounts from your credit report.
