Can you explain why gold was and is considered the most precious meta? Why not silver, for example?

Gold was one of the first few metals used by humans in its elemental form, the others being silver and copper, because it could be found uncombined and needed no sophisticated refining techniques. All three are attractive to man. However, unlike silver and copper, gold does not tarnish. combining that trait with the fact that gold is also the most workable of metals, it seems only reasonable that it would soon become accepted in exchange for goods and services, eventually assuming its present stature by sheer force of its long-standing reputation.

Gold has been widely accepted in the world and in every civilization. Some physical features of gold are attractive to men and it is not easy to be found. Silver and other metals are attractive and rare but gold is more often associated with the men's psychological perspective.

Gold has been associated with the extremities of utmost evil and great sanctity throughout history. In the Book of Exodus, the Golden Calf is a symbol of idolatry and rebellion against God.

In the Book of Genesis, Abraham was said to be rich in gold and silver, and Moses was instructed to cover the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant with pure gold.

Gold is associated with notable anniversaries, particularly in a 50-year cycle, such as a golden wedding anniversary, golden jubilee, etc.

Great human achievements are frequently rewarded with gold, in the form of medals and decorations (statues etc).

Medieval kings were inaugurated under the signs of sacred oil and a golden crown, the latter symbolizing the eternal shining light of heaven and thus a Christian king's divinely inspired authority.

Wedding rings are traditionally made of gold; since it is long-lasting and unaffected by the passage of time, it is considered a suitable material for everyday wear as well as a metaphor for the relationship.

I don't know the truth to it but my opinion is that gold is one of the softest metal and it might have been the most rare at the time it became desired?

My guess. I could be wrong.

The more rare, the more "precious"! Silver is very common, gold isn't! Same with stones...diamonds are rare and are expensive.

Gold is more rare than silver, and it does not tarnish or corrode.
