I've been on tax code BR since i started my job 4 months ago....?

i work 40 hours a month and my salary is approx £3250. it is my only job and am being taxed about £65 each month. i don't think i should be paying tax/much tax. how would i go about getting a rebate, if i'm entitled to one?

All UK citizens get a tax-free personal allowance of £6475 a year, or £540 a month. I take it amount quoted is your annual rate of pay.
How long have you been working? Did employer ask you to sign form P46 if you didn't have a form P45 from a previous employer when you started? Code BR (Basic Rate, a straight 20% deduction) should only be applied if this was a second job, where a new employee can't or won't sign a form P46, or for a foreign national who is waiting for their residency to be established. Ask employer about a form P46. A lot of employers don't get the message regarding their obligations with that form, so if you have problems contact tax office (employer/payroll can give details. Ask for a correct cumulative code number to be issued. Employer should then make any refund due with next wages.

BR stands for Basic Rate Tax and should only be used for the first few weeks of new employment - get in touch with the local tax office or see the payroll department of your job. When it's sorted you will probably get a refund.

Did you fill in a form P46 when you started? If not, get one from your employer now! If you did, get in touch with the tax office to ask for your proper code number.
