Do you believe it is ethical for companies to compile portfolios of personal information on their Website visitors without informing them? How about for organizations to monitor their employees’ use of the Web?
I don't have a problem with a company compiling that data. In essence what they are doing is an attempt to drive business through targeting of people who have a foot in the door by way of visiting their website. I do have a problem with companies who then sell that information to other companies however.
I think it is essential companies monitor their employees. Whether its on the sales floor, on sales calls or on the web you have to have an idea what they are doing and how they are doing it in order to improve your business. I would have no problem with someone monitoring my web activity at work. Then again, I wouldn't be using the web at work for fantasy football etc. like many do. A study was published last year that showed a large number of employees who use company time for fantasy football every day during the season!
